Chapter Seven
âThere you are,â he said, his heart slowing to its normal rhythm as soon as her fiery red hair came into view. Then, like it hadnât slowed at all, his pulse went into overdrive as he took in the tall, statuesque form of the woman he loved compactly settled into the overstuffed armchair in the corner of his office opposite his desk. Every damned time he saw her, his body acted like it was seeing her for the first time again. Would he ever get used to her in his world, sharing his space, living beside him? God, he hoped not.
She held up a glass of wine in a silent response to his greeting and took a long swallow. It was sexy as sin watching the liquid pour down her throat, spotting the drop of burgundy liquid on her lip that her tongue greedily slaked over, making his pants grow tight around the zipper again. Another side effect that seemed to occur every time he laid eyes on her.
âAnd I see you found the wine fridge. I hope you opened something good. I was planning on toasting us when I got off the phone.â
âOh, yes? What are we toasting, exactly?â
He bristled at the reply, shriller than the typically confident but tender tone of voice she used with him. Was it just his sensitivity when it came to her and reading between the lines, or was she pissed?
âUm, yeah. Iâd like to toast bringing you here, to talking about our future and all the joys and challenges that may lie ahead. I made some headway with our wedding preparations and they should be underway after we can put this mess behind us. Thereâs a lot to celebrate, donât you think? But first Iâd like to talk to you about what Tomás called about. Is that okay?â
She didnât respond right away, just peered at him through eyes that seemed to cut right through to the core of him. Was she mad because he left her to take the call? He got why that might have rubbed her the wrong way, but heâd done it very much on purpose. He couldnât talk to his brother around her, not if keeping Lissa safe was the mission, which right now, it was. He could barely concentrate when she was around, not on anything other than stripping her bare right where she stood and burying his head between her legs. That wouldnât go over well with her still-betrothed, his brother.
As for the alarming contents of the call, heâd share those just after he had a chance to relax alongside Lissa. Liquor in some form or another would be a requisite to hashing out the tip Tomás had called to confirm. Then, maybe with both behind them, they could relax and enjoy their holiday together. He had more than a couple of surprises up his sleeve and couldnât wait to share them with Liss. Heâd only been telling a half-truth when it came to their wedding preparations.
